One of the most common questions asked by prospective student pilots is “how long will it take to get my license”? Most flight instructors that you ask will say it depends on a few things:

  1. How often you fly will greatly affect your time table. Most instructors will say that 2 to 3 times a week will be adequate to complete your training in about 70 hours of flight time.
  2. How well you are able to learn and obtain the information passed on by your CFI. Flying a minimum of 2 times a week will give a student a chance to talk about and see an example of a maneuver on one day and perform the maneuver in the same week. This will keep the students mind fresh.
  3. The most common problem with finishing training in a timely fashion is funding. The costs of flight training add up quickly, so being properly funded before you start your training will greatly lower training time.

The national average for the private certificate is around 70 hours and a little over 6 months according to AOPA Pilot Magazine. But if time is to the up most importance, there are some instructors that can get a student through training in just 50 hours and in 5 to 6 months. Those students fly in excess of 3 days a week with a ground lecture before and after the flight. No matter how long it takes to learn to fly, take the time to enjoy the process. Nothing in life can compare to flying above the clouds.
