Do you love to fly? Can you get your point across to others? Can you speak clearly? Do you have tons of PATIENCE? If you have answered yes to these questions then you have what it takes to become a good CFI. Being a CFI means more than being a teacher it means being a friend, advocate and passionate.
The first few flights with a student affect the rest of the training, if not the rest of his or her life. A good CFI can teach the student the proper techniques while keeping it fun, relaxing and exciting. The aviation community is small as it is so we don’t need CFI’s scaring students away from a potentially satisfying career.
The requirements for becoming a CFI are the following
- Be 18 years of age
- Hold at least a commercial certificate with an instrument rating
- Pass 2 written exams as well as a FAA practical flight test
There are not required flight hours or ground training to become a CFI. However, the national average is 25 hours of ground training and 15 hours of flight instruction. For more information about the requirements review part §61.181 in the current FAR's.
Don’t have the current FAR/AIM? Check out this site from the FAA.
